Skyscape Ceramic Series by Tom Marino

The Skyscape ceramic series explores light and darkness through the times of day and night. The atmospheric imagery portrays wind, light, shadows, flames and abstract designs in a painterly way on hourglass and classic vessel shapes. The work considers light transforming from day into night and back again revealing the mysteries of light, space and time. Each time of day embraces the promise of the other: daytime has its shadows and nighttime has its moon and stars.

The ceramics use multiple glazes and slips to contrasting effects including Marino’s own glaze formulations which utilize his chemistry background. The porcelain and white stoneware clay is high-fired (2350 F) under heavy reduction atmosphere.

Working in clay for over 30 years, Marino’s work is in many private and public collections including the Canton Museum of Art, the Crocker Art Museum, the American Museum of Ceramic Art, the Zanesville Museum of Art and the Block Museum. He has exhibited nationally including the Zanesville Prize in Contemporary Ceramics, SOFA Chicago, the Toledo Area Artists Exhibition, the Ohio Designer Craftsmen “Best of” competition, “The Vase and Beyond” at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, Calif., and a solo exhibition at the Zanesville Museum of Art. He has shown in many other group and solo exhibitions and won numerous awards.
